Tettegouche Arch Falls. Now the Tettegouche Stack

THE STONE ARCH AT TETTEGOUCHE IS NO MORE

This month’s change of scenery comes once again from the North Shore in Northern MN.  ‘One of the most famous icons along the North Shore of Lake Superior is the Stone Arch found at Tettegouche State Park. As an icon it is photographed each year by thousands of visitors, many coming for the first time and some who are returning for another look. It had stood along the shores of Lake Superior weathering eons of storms, Minnesota winters and the occasional crash of a powerful wave from the mighty lake. But no more.

Over the past [month] visiting photographers were met with something they did not expect, the arch had collapsed. After years and years of erosion and weathering even rock must succumb. There were no reports of weather, no big waves, no storm. It appears that it was the simply felled by the ever moving force of time’ – 2010 Gary Udstrand Read More.

North Shore Scenic Railway

NORTH SHORE SCENIC RAILWAY

This month’s change of scenery comes once again from the North Shore in Northern MN. History comes alive on the Lakefront line of the North Shore Scenic Railroad. Each summer equipment from the museum makes the transition from static display to rolling stock on our working railroad. During the season several trains a day depart the historical Union Depot for a trip through downtown Duluth, Canal Park, along the shore of the Lake Superior and deep into the majestic North woods. Fully narrated tours tell the history of Duluth, the harbor, and the stories of the railroads that connected the people and transported the material that built the region.

TCS Corcoran Snapping Turtle

SNAPPING TURTLE

This month’s change of scenery comes from our own parking lot in Corcoran, MN. The photo was taken last month by Cory as our not-so-friendly Snapping Turtle was making it’s way across our parking lot. We later located the hole she was digging in the sand. We presume she was digging the hole to lay some eggs.

**Update: In early September we found 15+ baby snapping turtles emerging from the hole and wondering across the parking lot.  All but one survived the journey, and were placed off the road on their way towards the swamp.

Devils Tower

DEVIL’S TOWER

This month’s change of scenery comes from Devils Tower. The photo was taken last summer by Jamie G. from the road leading up to the tower next to the prairie dog village. Some facts on Devils Tower: It is the country’s first national monument. President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated it in 1906. The tower is 1267 tall and overlooks the Belle Fourche River and surrounding valley. Devils Tower is sacred to over 20 native American tribes and is known by the names Bear’s Ti-pi, Bear Lodge, and Home of the Bear to name a few. Science says the tower was created by a tectonic uplifting. Native Americans have a variety of origin stories, many revolving around a bear and 7 brothers and sisters. The stories say the bear that caused the scratches in the tower when trying to get the brothers and sisters. Many native Americans still utilize the site for sacred ceremonies.

BACK YARD FOX

This month’s change of scenery comes from Brooklyn Park, MN. Jenny was fortunate enough to snap a few photos of her backyard visitor earlier this month. It’s not often we see a Fox in the city. I’m sure it had nothing to do with the Robins in the birdbath from last year’s Desktop Download.

LAKE CABIN SUNRISE

This month’s change of scenery comes from Northern, MN. As March comes to a close, the Twin Cities had a rare first-ever March experience… No SNOW! With the warmer than usual March, many of us are looking forward to heading back up to our cabins for the spring and summer months. This picture was taken last summer, and helps remind of the excitement of re-opening our cabins, and laying in the sun!

FALL COLORS

This month’s change of scenery comes from Corcoran, MN and was taken near our office. While we’re sad to see fall colors go, we’re just happy to live in an area with changing seasons and colors. I guess it’s better than our usual two seasons, winter and road construction. Right click on your correct size and then select “Set As Desktop Background” from the options.
