What is an Embedded, Fanless PC? How does it Work?
PCs generate heat as a result of power consumption, and if the heat is not dispersed, the PC can be damaged. Most PCs use fans to release heat. An embedded fanless PC is a sealed computer that uses heat sinks to transfer heat. A heat sink is connected to the parts of the PC that consume the most power (i.e. CPU) and, therefore, produce the most heat. Heat is transferred from the components to the heat sink and dispersed to the air. The size of the heat sink and the material it’s made from determines the coolness of the device when it’s in operation. High performance fanless embedded PCs are engineered with special heat pipes and finned aluminum chassis, where the chassis body is itself a large surface area heat sink.
What Benefits do Embedded PCs offer?
Embedded fanless PCs offer a broad range of benefits including quiet operation, protection from vibration, mechanical shock, dust, temperature extremes, and harsh environments.
PCs that contain parts with moving components are prone to failure from mechanical shock and vibration. Items such as hard drives and fans are typically the first point of failure in high shock and vibration settings. Fanless embedded PCs with solid state drives have no moving components, and they offer the best protection from damage in high vibration settings. Fanless embedded PCs are commonly specified for use in applications such as portable test equipment, automotive and transportation, factory automation, and anywhere the PC is mounted inside or on a machine.
PCs that contain fans are prone to failure in dusty environments and environments with air-born particulates. Computer fans pull dust into the system and this dust eventually clogs the air filter and coats the internal components. Without adequate ventilation, the CPU will overheat causing the CPU to either fail or thermal throttle by reducing clock speed, which greatly reduces performance. Without proper ventilation, the life expectancy of the CPU, motherboard, and hard drive are greatly reduced. Fanless embedded PCs are commonly specified for high dust environments like agriculture, steel foundries, mining, and packaging.
Protection in Harsh Environments
Computers that are used in harsh environments need to be sealed. For instance, a robot that will be sent out into the rain will need to have a computer inside it that is sealed to protect it from the rain. The only way to seal a computer is to remove the fan and use a different method to conduct the heat that the PC generates.
Any environment where exposure to elements or harsh chemicals is possible warrants the use of a fanless, embedded PC.
